ORIGINS

It is believed that tea (Camellia sinensis) was discovered some 5,000 years ago by the Chinese Emperor, Shen Nung. Whilst resting under a tree and boiling his drinking water, leaves from a tea plant blew into his cauldron. A renowned herbalist, the Emperor tasted the brew, finding it refreshing and invigorating and the beverage of tea was born.

Whilst tea was discovered in China it was not until 1823 that it was first grown in India. Indian tea arrived in London in 1838 and by the 1870's the British had established tea plantations in Ceylon. Nowadays tea is grown from China to Argentina, Nepal to South Africa significantly contributing to the national economies of the producing countries. Next to water, tea is the world's most consumed drink.
