usually served hot, typically cosisting of chocolate or cocoa powder
ORIGINS
Chocolate was first consumed by the ancient civilizations of Central and South America. The Mayan Indians discovered the delights of the cocoa bean as long ago as 600 AD. Later, the ancient Aztecs consumed chocolate in the form of a luxury drink. They finely ground the cocoa beans adding chili water, aromatic flowers, vanilla and wild bee honey.
The first cocoa beans were brought back from South America by Christopher Columbus between 1502 and 1504. However in 1528 it was the Spanish Conquistador, Don Hernan Cortes, who first developed cocoa beans commercially in Spain. Spanish Monks processed the beans adding cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar and perfecting the taste.
The custom of drinking hot chocolate slowly spread across Europe, reaching England in the 1650's. Due to the high import duties at the time, chocolate was only drunk by the wealthy.
