an infusion made with fresh or dried flowers, leaves, seeds or roots.
ORIGINS
Herbal teas or tisanes are not made from traditional tea leaves. Instead they can be made with fresh or dried flowers, leaves, seeds or roots that have been steeped in boiling water, allow their flavours to mature.
The English word 'tisane' originates from the Greek, ptisan, and was originally a drink made from pearl barley. Today there are a number of herbal and fruit blends. These combine the health benefits of herbal tea with the flavour of fruits, producing a refreshing alternative to traditional tea and coffee.
GREEN TEA
Originating from the same tea bush as traditional black tea, green tea is not oxidized thus preserving the leaf colour. The leaves of green tea is withered then steamed or pan fired to stop the oxidization process. Green teas contain less caffeine than more traditional teas but are packed full of anti-oxidants. They provide the imbiber with a healthy alternative to traditional tea.
