bean-like seeds of a tropical shrub, roasted and ground for making a drink
ORIGINS
It is believed that coffee beans were discovered when a goat herder from Caffa, Ethopia noticed his goats had become hyperactive having eaten red berries from a wild bush. Tasting the berries for himself, he also felt energized.
The coffee bean developed when an Arabian, banished to the desert with his followers to die of starvation, boiled and ate the fruits of this unknown plant. The liquid saved them from starvation and was taken as a religious sign by the inhabitants of the nearest town of Mocha.
